- The Oaklea is McDonald’s Saddlery’s own handcrafted western saddle — and it shows. Built from premium Argentinian leather throughout, it carries the kind of suppleness, strength and character that you only get from a hide that’s been properly tanned at the source. Argentina is regarded among leatherworkers as producing some of the finest cattle hides in the world, and the Oaklea puts that quality to work in every panel, flap and jockey. The seat is finished in super soft suede — a natural grip surface that keeps the rider secure without restricting movement — and beautifully detailed with hand-tooled basketweave and oak leaf tooling across the skirts and jockeys. Three colour options are available: Chestnut/Antique with a black suede seat, Natural/Antique with a brown suede seat, and Chocolate/Antique with a brown suede seat. Each is finished with latigo leather billets on both the near and off sides — a hard-wearing, low-stretch material that keeps the cinch consistent and your saddle sitting level ride after ride. Fitted with a Flexi Full Quarter Horse Bar (FQHB) tree, the Oaklea is well-suited to the broader, flatter withers common in Australian stock horses, Quarter Horses and crossbreeds. The Flexi designation means the tree has a small degree of engineered flex built in — enough to adapt slightly to your horse’s movement through the back, which can meaningfully improve comfort on longer sessions without compromising structural integrity. The subtly shaped skirts are a deliberate design choice. They sit the rider closer to the horse than a heavily flared western skirt, which makes a real difference in disciplines where leg contact and precision of aid matter — particularly Reining and Western Dressage. That closer contact, combined with the secure seat and durable latigo billets, also makes the Oaklea a reliable Ranch saddle for a full day’s work. Available in 15″, 16″ and 17″ seat sizes, all with a 7″ – 7½″ gullet. Skirt length ranges from 26.5″ (15″ seat) to 28.5″ (17″ seat). Weight: 13.5–14.5kg depending on size.
